Auntie Amy came for a visit and we had a wonderful time! It was nice to have her spend some time with the us and the kids because usually when she sees them she has to compete with all the rest of the family - this time she got them all to her self!
Amy, Emily and I did some wedding shopping and got some fabulous bridesmaid dresses for Em and Jeff's wedding in August. We had a fun girls day together. The next day Em, Amy and Jeff went to NYC. Andy and I spent the day with three very crabby girls, which we found out why today... Stevie is getting one of her back teeth - I always thought it was 2 year molars - why is she getting them now? Regardless, she is and that means the other 2 girls are too. So that explains the whining and crying all day yesterday :-)
The girls last day of daycare was this past Friday as well. Andy's back to doing it solo during the week days... It's bittersweet - the girls loved the daycare the few days they went and they loved them. We will love the extra money in our pockets though :-) In exchange for giving up daycare, Andy joined a great gym near us. And they have a daycare! So this will be great for Andy and it will get the kids out of the house and still playing with other kids. We'll keep you posted on everyone's progress :-)

17 Months! (one day early)
We again took advantage of the warm weather and played outside today. I love playing outside - both for something to do and it's great for naps! The kids get worn out which means better napping and better sleeping for all :-) Here's some pictures from the day...

The girls first experience with sand...
It's hard to believe the girls will be 17 months. Where has the time gone? And next month a year and a half? That's just completely nuts... I think they are all going through a growth spurt right now because they seem heavier and they are eating pretty much everything in sight. Let's hope for some good solid weight gain by their next Doctors appt next month. It would be nice to be able to turn them around to face forward in the car before the age of 5 :-)

It's the small things...
These are the things that make all the difference... So when Aven started to stand in her bath seat and then wouldn't sit down, we took it away and now all 4 kids can take a bath at the same time. Before we would bathe the girls and then take one out, plus the seat, and get Declan in. Now, all at once. If I calculated how much time this saves us, I'd be proud of this. But I don't anymore, I just know it's the small things that make all the difference... I hate to think about how dirty that water is, but hey - at least they are cleaner when they get out than when they go in :-) Recently there was a article where Tori Spelling was talking about how her family showers together and how it was normal for them. She said, when you have 4 kids, you have to get creative and it takes too long to bathe them all individually. I couldn't agree more, however the family shower thing seems a bit too slippery for us, especially with 3 the same age. Perhaps in the future - although we'd need to get a bigger shower, I won't count anything out :-)

We also are now at two bottles a day for the girls, one when they wake up and one when they go to bed. We've taken out the late afternoon bottle and replaced it with a sippy cup (along with the other meals). They are all doing pretty good with their cups, but because we still need to make sure they get their fatty milk, I anticipate leaving these bottles in their day for a while longer. But one less bottle feeding is 3 less bottles we need to clean and store. Again, it's the small things.... A few months ago, I had a rare one on one with one of the girls (I think it was Bria, but can't exactly remember). We went to one of the local malls to get a few things. As we were walking through Barnes and Noble on our way out, I saw a couple who had a young baby, she was reading a book and rocking the baby to sleep in his/her stroller with her foot. She stopped, peered under the blanket to find a sleeping baby. She looked at her partner and they did a fist pound and kept on their reading. I loved this. Because it reminded me of Andy and I giving each other high fives when we do something like eliminate a bottle in a day, or when we were first able to get them all to nap at the same time. You've gotta celebrate these things, because no one else will :-)
Today was the first day that we could actually take the kids out to the park and let them play (without being so bundled up that they couldn't walk). It's the first time that the girls actually explore the park. After we scared off another family, we had the park to ourselves. The girls held true to their personalities. Aven was off, the minute we put her down. Climbing the stairs, walking all around, taking a face-plant by walking down a hill and going down the slide on her own (twice). She's fearless (most of the time). Stevie took a bit of time, but then she was off, crawling up the stairs and having a ball with her brother. Bria hung out in the swing or my arms :-) She was a little unusually crabby today, but she wasn't as exploratory as her other sisters. Declan of course had a blast and told us when we were leaving that "he had a really good day" - and it was only 1 pm :-)

I'm sure we'll have another fun filled day outside again tomorrow as the weather is warming up!

The homeland...
Although it's only been half a month, it feels like it's been half a year since I've written a blog. After Stevie's hospitalization and the other two girls stomach flu, they finally got on the mend. While on the mend, we made the trip back to Wisconsin during Declan's spring break. It was a great vacation where we got to spend time with family and friends. The kids loved being in a new environment and it reminded me how much has changed since we were all last there this past August. My folks definitely had to do some baby-proofing this time. Saturday night we made the long drive home and were happy to be in our own beds by Easter.
Here are some pictures from the week. The girls liked to eat on the floor - or maybe it was just us that thought it was easier when they ate their snack on the floor :-) L to R: Bria, Aven & Stevie

That's puke on my hand...
To say this was one of the worst weeks ever is an understatement... It started Monday when we woke up and I just didn't feel right about how Stevie was the night before and how she was acting in the morning. So I asked Andy to take her to the Doctor to get checked out. They have all had lingering colds, for what feels like about the last 5 months, but it seemed different this time. Needless to say, the Doctor visit turned into a two night stay at the hospital for Stevie... She was breathing too fast and wasn't getting enough oxygen. Luckily for us, Mary and Jessie are here so they can help with the kids and Andy and I could split our time with Stevie. The first night at the hospital was really rough - I had to hold the oxygen mask to her face non-stop the entire night. And it brought me back to the days in NICU as the monitor would beep because she would de-sat. It wasn't a fun experience.. The next day was better because she wasn't de-sating as much so we didn't need to hold the mask to her face quite as much. They tested her for everything, RSV, Flu, etc, and all negative. It seems as though it is just a bad respiratory virus that is taking her time to kick. She also had an ear infection, which was interesting because you would have never known. She was released from the hospital late the third night. And since, she's been sleeping with me while I give her breathing treatments throughout the night and try to get her to drink something. We took her back in today for a check up with our pediatrician because she hasn't been eating or drinking anything since she came home (assuming it's because of all the medication she is on). Today she seems to be eating a bit more and drinking a bit more. She still has terrible coughing spells and overall isn't herself yet. I'm hoping she recovers soon, because I'll be honest, if I never see another hospital again, it will be too soon. Part of the reason this happened to our little Stevie is because her lungs are weaker than a normal babies - all the girls are since they were preemies - but especially Stevie since she was on a respirator for so long. Given this, even once she's off most of the medication from this illness, our pediatrician wants her to stay on the steroid nebulizer that she is on for the next 6 months. It's a small price to pay to do that twice a day to not have to go through this again.
Meanwhile, at casa de Lawry, Aven started puking, then Bria started... And the other two girls had the stomach flu, or whatever virus that made them puke for 3 days straight. We took them both in as well because they had mild coughs and I was wondering if they had ear infections as well since we had no idea Stevie had one (and the girls nor Declan have ever had one). Sure enough, Aven had a double ear infection and Bria had one as well. So Stevie was in the hospital, Aven and Bria were puking and screaming, then I got sick (and still am a bit) as well as Mary (with Bronchitis and a sinus infection). Jeez! When it rains it pours I guess...
Aven and Bria seem to be kicking the bug, slowly - they haven't puked for at least 24 hours (knock on wood), but they aren't eating normal yet and there is a lot of poop. I mean seriously, shit everywhere... In the past few hours, Aven has completely blown out from head to toe twice. I'm not sure I've seen that much poop come out of one person and completely cover their body. Sorry for the gory details, but I needed to make sure you all understood :-)
So the title of the blog is based on a conversation that Andy and I had on our way home from the Doctor yesterday...

- We were laughing about something that was totally inappropriate and if I told you what it was, you would for sure think we are the worst parents ever (so I'll save it for another post)
- K: I'm glad I have you to go through this with babe...
- A: Me too... (then kisses my hand)
- K: Oh, Stevie puked on that hand and I didn't get a chance to wash it yet...

16 Months!
The girls turned 16 months this past Friday... I was trying to figure out something clever with what they've done in these 16 months... But as we sat at the Doctor's office on Thursday, the only thing that came to mind is how many times we've been to a Doctor's appointment in the past 13 months since they have been home from the NICU. So when we got home from their latest Doctor appointment which was an x-ray and ultrasound of their hips (something that they need to do because both Aven and Stevie were breach - Bria got to miss out on the appt), I decided to count the appointments that we've had. Here's what I found... Since they came home in February 2012, we have had 47 Doctor's appointments (some of which were just for 1 girl, and some of which were for all the girls), 1 surgery for Aven (hernia) and 62 EI (early intervention) sessions for Stevie. What's crazy is that all this is for "healthy" preemies! Can't imagine what it would be like otherwise...
Here's an update on some of these Doctor's appointments... Recently the girls had their 15 month check up and their Pediatrician was pleased with their progress. Of course she thinks they are amazing, just like the rest of us. Both Aven and Bria have made the growth charts - they both are in the 5th percentile for weight and height - based on their adjusted age. So they are in the 5th of other 12 month olds. Stevie still hasn't made the chart yet, but she's getting closer... We had some blood work done during this visit as a follow up to the endocrinologist (bone Doctor) that we met with a few months back. For both Aven and Bria they have high potassium, which forced us to go back and draw more blood (please picture holding a child down while they stick a needle in a tiny tiny arm - poor babies). The second time had the same results, so then we talked to the bone Doctor and he said it could be a sign of a thyroid problem. BUT the levels weren't high enough that he's concerns at this point. So we will draw more blood at their 18 month appointment to see where their levels are and then go from there. Stevie's levels seemed to be okay. Stevie, however is now being monitored for high blood pressure again with the nephrologist. Hopefully her next appointment in a few months we will be done with that. So overall, they are doing a-ok and we'll just continue on the regular Doctor appointments. Hey - at least we know they are being monitored closely :-)
Here's what these 16 month olds are up to...
Aven: She walking all around now and almost runs (usually when her brother is chasing her). She will still crawl a bit and can be unsteady, but she is walking more than crawling. She got her first pair of "real" shoes yesterday from Grandma Mary, so she's having fun learning how to walk in those. She talks a lot, but nothing you can really understand. She's still the diva of the bunch and the biggest mommas girls. Sometimes I need to avoid eye contact with her, otherwise she'll make a beeline for me and tug on my legs until I pick her up and have some snuggles. She's the dancer and clearly didn't get her awesome moves from her mom or dad - must be from big brother. She's also the climber, whether it be the highchair, couch or bath, she will find a way out. I'm thinking we may need to think about lowering her crib again. Luckily for us, her height is not on her side. Aven seems to be most like how big brother was when he was one... Should be interesting to see if she's like him at the age of 4 - YIKES!
Bria: She is walking as well... Although it's probably 50/50 between walking and crawling, she's acclimated to walking faster than her sister Aven. She also got her first pair of shoes yesterday. Bria is a daddy's girl and is generally a happy little girl, except when she throws her self onto the ground in her temper tantrums. She is still the biggest, although only by a few ounces. I think in general she looks bigger, but I think that's because she has a bigger head (like her big brother). She's also a bulldozer, meaning she doesn't go around objects or people, she goes through them. And if one of her sisters are in the way, she has no problem pushing them aside. What's funny is that she likes to give more than take - meaning she acts tough, but when her other sisters try to push her around, she's the biggest baby ever. For a while, I thought her and Aven were most alike, but now it almost seems like Bria is the perfect balance between Aven (the needy one) and Stevie (the sweet one).
Stevie: Steve is crawling all around and doesn't appear she is on the walking path just yet. Generally what we've seen is that Stevie is a few months behind her sisters, so I think we have a couple of months yet. It's not because she "can't" per say, it's just because of how small she is. I just don't think her muscles are ready for it yet. Although Stevie has always been the sweet and "calmer" one, she does hold her own with her sisters. She won't let them bully her and will push her way through as well. There's times where you get a glimpse of her taking a toy from her sister and Andy and I do a silent fist pump. Stevie is also a bit of a loner - meaning that she does her own thing, can play by herself and doesn't need to immediately sit on your lap when you walk into the room. She has no problem doing her own thing. She's also more of a thinker and more observant. She tries to work through things and figure them out, versus her other sisters (and big brother) who get frustrated easily and turn to something else. She was the one after all that figured out how to move the baby gate from the stairs so her other sisters could climb up. She is also the most entertained by her big brother - she loves him and thinks he's the funniest in the world. She may be taking over as Declan's "favorite" :-). It's amazing at how similar the girls are, but yet how different their personalities can be.

Break time...
We cherish nap time... And the time when the girls go to bed... Although Declan stays up later, he's usually entertained by the TV or by my iPad, so it's really a time that we enjoy. So much so that if you call during one of these times, I may hang up on you or not even answer at all. No kidding, just ask my sister :-) It's a time where we actually get stuff done, catch up on the blog or do whatever. The girls are still taking two naps a day, which is awesome, but I'm really not looking forward to making the change to one nap. I feel like Declan changed to one nap right around a year. The girls haven't done anything the way Declan did, so I'm gong to ride this two naps a day and in bed by 7 pm until they tell me otherwise. Hopefully they will be 8 years old and still taking naps and going to bed early. Since Declan stopped taking naps when he was 2 and hasn't seen bedtime at 7 pm since he was probably 13 months, I'm bound to get this right with the girls. Isn't that what first children are for? You mess up with them and then the second time around, you correct it :-) We'll see if it works...
Most of us are on the mend from being sick. Stevie still has a bad cough and Declan finally got hit by the cold, but Aven, Bria, Andy and I are feeling much better. Here are a few pictures and videos from the past few weeks...
